Sceptical leaders sign precarious peace deal
Article Abstract:
The leaders of Serbia, Bosnia and Croatia have now signed a formal agreement designed to bring peace to the Balkans. However, there is a widespread feeling that the future of the region remains uncertain. The main responsibility for keeping the peace there will rest with Nato, which is to send 60,000 troops to Bosnia. UK prime minister John Major has emphasised Nato's desire to ensure that the countries of former Yugoslavia become a stable part of Europe.

The future: can the Dayton deal lead to a lasting settlement?
Article Abstract:
The peace settlement agreed recently for Bosnia will only be seen as truly successful if it brings long-term stability to the region. The leaders of Croatia and Serbia have agreed to no longer attempt to annex large areas of Bosnia, but it is uncertain whether they will keep this agreement permanently. There will certainly be pressure from Serb and Croat nationalists in Bosnia for a Greater Serbia and a Greater Croatia long into the future.
