Great minds share a cesspool
Article Abstract:
Film director Roman Polanski has suffered a number of failures over recent years, and his reputation has been damaged. However, his latest film, 'Death and the Maiden,' has been received positively, being seen as a return to the tight sexual and moral themes which made his early films so successful. He seems to have regained his self-confidence, moving away from a period in which he was unpredictable and deliberately stirred up controversy.

Love and death a la Provencal
Article Abstract:
Directing a film takes so much emotional effort that a considerable length of time must be allowed to elapse before a new film project can be started, according to director Jean-Paul Rappeneau. This is why he has directed only six feature films during his 30 year career. Despite this, he has been able to achieve international acclaim, especially for 'Cyrano de Bergerac.' His most recent film, 'The Horseman on the Roof,' is also a romance.

Why the prime minister had to see La Haine
Article Abstract:
The film 'La Haine,' which is set on a housing estate and follows 24 hours in the lives of its three main characters, has been extremely successful in France. Prime minister Alain Juppe even insisted that all cabinet ministers watch it. It deals with very sensitive issues, such as police brutality and the government's neglect of public housing, and reflects the strong hatred of injustice which is felt by its director, Mathieu Kassovitz.
