Schools in 'Big Brother' fear
Article Abstract:
The UK government is seeking to improve the quality of school performance measurements through developing methods by with schools 'value-added' education can be assessed, rather than just have a simple comparison of qualifications passed per school. In order to do this the government is proposing to create a computer database for the results of all exams and tests sat by children, which would be able to keep track of children as they moved between schools. It is hoped that this will give the whole education system greater flexibility, but concerns about its privacy implications have been voiced by the Data Protection Registrar.

American company says it can save our sink schools
Article Abstract:
The Edison Project, a US company which runs 25 schools under contract to local authorities, hopes to extend its scheme to the UK. The project specialises in raising the standards of inner city schools, operating a longer day and shorter holidays than normal, and frequently appoints completely new staff in the schools it takes over. Edison is holding exploratory talks with six UK local authorities, with the hope of running 50 schools in the UK on a consultancy basis. The company's methods strongly influenced the establishment of education action zones, due to open in September 1998.

Why don't our schools teach philosophy?
Article Abstract:
There is very little chance for pupils at UK schools to study philosophy. This is regrettable, as studying philosophy can play a significant role in encouraging young people to think for themselves and develop skills in presenting and analyzing arguments.
