Scientists have tasted the future - it's a red goosebery, a pineapple-flavoured strawberry, and a green-pea steak
Article Abstract:
Scientists belonging to the Fruit Technology group, led by Dr. David Simpson, at the Horticulture Research Institute (HRI), East Malling, UK, are working on the production of fruit with more flavour, longer storage life and better resistance to disease, using cross breeding and genetic engineering. They have developed a Bolero strawberry which can grow in late October, which is full of flavour and juice, and also a pineapple-flavoured white strawberry, which might not be marketable. They are also working on inserting a gene into apples to stop them ripening fast.

A little of a good thing can be wonderful. Can't it?
Article Abstract:
Research into the health impact of drinking wine has produced mixed findings. There are some indications that drinking wine in small quantities can reduce the risk of heart disease. In contrast, other research shows that women who drink reasonably large quantities of wine have an increased risk of breast cancer. The wine market in the UK has grown extremely rapidly, probably because the UK does not have its own wine culture and has therefore been targeted by wine-producing countries.

The village that reached the end of the road
Article Abstract:
Covehithe, a village in Suffolk, UK, is gradually disappearing, eroded by the sea. By 2026 it is expected to have disappeared completely. Marjorie Bagley lived at the end of a road leading to the sea until 1978, when her garden disappeared in a storm and her home was knocked down by the council because it was not safe. Major Timothy Gooch, the local landowner, who inherited land which has been owned by his relatives since 1746, does not expect to leave land to his heirs.
