Tony's friends: the group that guides a leader
Article Abstract:
The Labour party has recently been criticised for concentrating decision-making power in the hand of leader Tony Blair and a few very close associates. It is certainly true that Tony Blair relies on a series of separate close relationships with individuals, even though there is no real inner cabinet of the kind implied in the criticism. Tony Blair has rejected all criticism of any concentration of power, and has called for staff to be judged on the basis of their performance.

Under starter's orders
Article Abstract:
The UK Conservative party will soon have a parliamentary majority of only one, and this makes it increasingly unlikely that it will be able to remain in government until May 1997, which is when prime minister John Major would prefer to fight an election. Even if no more MPs defect from the party, then it is quite likely that a few will die before then. Despite this, John Major will probably be determined to postpone an election for as long as possible.

Inside the court of Sir James
Article Abstract:
Billionaire businessman Sir James Goldsmith is having a considerable influence on political developments in the UK. He is causing problems for the Conservative party, and these look set to get worse as he invests 20 million pounds sterling in campaigning for a referendum on the UK's membership of the European Union. Some observers believe that he is merely dabbling in politics, but he has the money and contacts to be a very important factor.
