Religious right shakes up NY school polls
Article Abstract:
Elections for the 32 public school boards in New York, NY, are expected to attract more voters than usual because of the national debates about including alternative lifestyles in the curricula. The Christian Coalition, comprising followers of evangelical preacher Pat Robinson, organised with the Roman Catholic archdiocese. Opponents of Mr Joe Fernandex, chancellor of NY school board, voted him out for non-traditional teaching policies which included respect for homosexuals and availability of condoms for teenagers.

The Cold War is over and the bosses won
Article Abstract:
The US economy seems to be flourishing, but many workers are still suffering very difficult employment conditions. Pay for new jobs tends to be very low, and people are having to work longer hours to make up for the fact that wage rises are below the level of inflation. Managers seem to have gained additional powers, and seem to enjoy downsizing as much as possible, forcing people into working on short-term contracts and taking away many benefits.
