Seven years after Tiananmen no one mentions the massacre. Fear of chaos rules
Article Abstract:
China has seen considerable economic progress over recent years, with living standards for ordinary people having risen dramatically. Furthermore, there are few signs that the political unrest which led to the Tiananmen Square demonstrations in 1989 will break out again. However, there are no guarantees that economic growth will continue, and the government will eventually have to decide how to dismantle the huge state enterprises which are hampering further progress. The country is currently characterised by a strange imbalance between economic progress and political stagnation.

World fury as Nigeria sends writer to gallows
Article Abstract:
Nigerian author and playwright Ken Saro-Wiwa and eight other political activists have been executive by the country's military regime. Nigeria has attracted extensive international criticism for this move, which has cast a shadow over the Commonwealth heads of government summit currently taking place in New Zealand. Commonwealth leaders are being accused of not having put enough pressure on Nigeria before the executions were due to take place.
