Shame on you, Shakespeare
Article Abstract:
William Shakespeare's play 'The Merchant of Venice' has proved fascinating to many people. However, it is possible to argue that this play contains two flaws. Shakespeare was misguided in focusing on the ability of the Jews to handle money, the less significant of the two main causes of opposition to Jews. Secondly, the speech beginning 'Hath not a Jew eyes?' can be interpreted as patronizing, self-pitying and extremely offensive. These words contain the implication of medieval Christian arrogance that took on the right to confer or withdraw humanity.

Do you want to be in my gang?
Article Abstract:
Television writer Tony Grounds does not feel that his drama 'Births, Marriages and Deaths' is necessarily a very strong comment about the current state of the UK, although it does have a political element. He believes that there is small part of himself in all three of the main characters. He feels that all original writing comes from somewhere within the writer's own experience. He has shown that he can write material other than comedy, but believes that all good drama unites tragedy and comedy.
