Should Mr Blair really ask us to forget about the scandals?
Article Abstract:
UK Prime Minister Tony Blair is trying to encourage journalists to focus on his government's policies, rather than on the private lives of individual politicians. However, by diverting attention back to health, education and the economy, there is a danger that larger long-term problems could arise through fuelling expectations that cannot be fulfilled. The government is set to face significant challenges in 1999, especially as the economy worsens, and Blair is strongly aware that he must avoid divisions within the Labour party if it is to stand a good chance of winning the next election.

Anti-euro briefing by Brown camp reopens rift with Blair
Article Abstract:
Tension between UK Prime Minister Tony Blair and Chancellor Gordon Brown has been a key feature of the 1999 Labour party conference. Brown is becoming increasingly sceptical about the European single currency, in contrast with Blair's more positive stance. Blair has made it clear that he does not intend to stand down in the middle of a second term, and this presents a significant barrier to Brown's political ambitions. Blair's advisers have clashed with Ed Balls, Brown's main economics advisor.
