Should you invest in ... clothing retailers?
Article Abstract:
Low levels of consumer spending in the UK are deterring investors from purchasing the shares of clothing retailers. However, these shares do have a place in an investment portfolio. Investors are being extremely selective, focusing on clothing retailers with a strong brand and clear management procedures. They are avoiding smaller retailers, which are very vulnerable to trends in consumer confidence. Consumer spending is likely to rise towards the end of 1999, but this will not necessarily benefit all clothing retailers.

Should you invest in ... engineering?
Article Abstract:
Engineering stocks may offer good prospects as a long-term investment, even though engineering firms have been experiencing difficulties recently. However, it is important to exercise caution when selecting engineering stocks. It is worth considering focusing on companies with clear product niches. Market leaders probably represent the safest investment, but even with these companies it is possible for investors to make mistakes.

So should you invest in ... food producers?
Article Abstract:
Investors in the UK are not particularly attracted to food producers, as other sectors offer better growth opportunities. The larger stocks in the sector, such as Cadburys and Unilever, appear the most attractive. However, some low cost producers, such as Unigate, are also performing well, and there seem to be genuine growth prospects in the chilled food sector. Manufacturers in this sector include Hazlewood Foods and WT Foods.
