Siege mentality keeps spirits up as curfew turns city into a ghost town
Article Abstract:
A curfew imposed on residents of New Orleans, LA, and the surrounding Louisiana basin remains in force, even though it now appears that Hurricane Georges has bypassed the city and is heading for the Gulf Coast in Mississippi. New Orleans has experienced high winds and heavy rain, and more than 1 million people are still in shelters. However, the city has escaped with much less damage than had been anticipated.

Industry heads for recession as May output falls by 1.9%
Article Abstract:
UK manufacturing output fell by 0.9% between Apr and May 2001 and was down 1.6% from the year-earlier period. There were particular problems in the electrical and optical sector, where output was down 3.7%. The government has stated that it cannot assist manufacturers.
