Sir Francis McLean

Broadcasting engineer Francis McLean studied at Birmingham University, England, before joining Western Electric, where he spent three years working on the design of high-power radio transmitters. He worked in France, Switzerland, Italy, Hungary and Czechoslovakia between 1928 and 1932, designing high-power equipment for broadcasting and telephone transmission. He joined the BBC's Station Design and Installation Dept as head of the radio section in 1937, and eventually reached the very top of the BBC engineering directorate.

Frank Gillard

Article Abstract:

Broadcaster Frank Gillard obtained a London University BSc from St Luke's College, Exeter, England. He taught in several different schools before the second world war, as well as broadcasting talks in the West Region. He joined the BBC staff in Bristol, England, as a talks assistant in Oct 1941. He was a war correspondent during the second world war, after which he returned to BBC Bristol and soon became the West Regional Director of Programmes. He was later appointed Controller, West Region.

Journalist Edwin Thompson was born in Ashford, England, in 1907. He studied History and Modern Languages at Downing College, Cambridge, England, and worked on a local newspaper before joining the Manchester Guardian in 1930.
