Women sue over contraceptive
Article Abstract:
It has been revealed that some 250 women are to take legal action against the distributors of the contraceptive device Norplant. A helpline established in June by an umbrella group of solicitors has received complaints from some 500 women who have expressed some concern about alleged side effects of the contraceptive. Norplant, is a contraceptive implant made up of six match-stick sized rods worn under the skin of the upper arm. These rods release the hormone levonorgestrel and cannot be seen, but can be felt. Some of the alleged side effects have included depression, weight gain, paranoia and hair loss. A test case against Hoechst Marion Roussel, which supplies the implants in the UK, will be heard in 1999 at the High Court. This will consist of some 10 cases especially selected. On a global scale the contraceptive implants are used by some 2mn women.
