Sir Paul's spin cannot alter the uncomfortable truth
Article Abstract:
The Metropolitan Police have launched a wide-reaching propaganda campaign in advance of the publication later in Feb 1999 of a report by Sir William Macpherson into the handling of the investigation of the racist murder of black teenager Stephen Lawrence. Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Paul Condon has visited The Times and The Daily Telegraph to discuss the case with editors and journalists, and the Macpherson inquiry has also been criticized by the Police Federation and the Police Superintendents Association. It would be better in the long run for the Metropolitan Police to acknowledge the deficiencies highlighted by the Lawrence case.

Litany of errors by bungling police
Article Abstract:
Metropolitan Police officers who handled the investigation into the racist murder of black teenager Stephen Lawrence in Apr 1993 made a number of serious errors. They failed to follow up possible leads promptly, they were patronizing towards Lawrence's family and they eliminated possible suspects too readily. While they hesitated, vital evidence was probably removed. They were unable to win the trust of witnesses, and did not undertake thorough searches or interviews.
