So far so good, but Europe remains a minefield
Article Abstract:
UK Conservative party leader William Hague has faced considerable challenges during his first year in office, but has generally performed quite well. He has shown a strong ability to win the backing of traditional Conservative supporters, and is clearly a natural platform speaker. He has prevented the party falling apart after its defeat in the May 1997 general election, and has been successful in shifting the party towards modern democratic practices. However, he still faces significant problems, particularly the UK's links with the European Union.

Why Major decided to turn and fight
Article Abstract:
Many senior Conservatives have expressed admiration for John Major's decision to resign as leader of the party, thus prompting a leadership contest very unexpectedly. He had become extremely frustrated by constant criticism of him and challenges to his authority, so decided to take the bold approach, daring his opponents to enter a public battle. He has taken a risk, but sees it as better than allowing a very unsatisfactory situation to continue.

A jolly good rebellion: but to what end?
Article Abstract:
The return to the Conservative party by the seven Eurorebels who had had the party whip removed is seen as a victory for the MPs in question, who emphasise that they have had to agree to no conditions to regain the whip. The issue was one of great concern for prime minister John Major, who really had very little room for manoeuvre. Many people have now gained the impression that he has been dictated to by the rebels.
