So this is the village of the future?
Article Abstract:
Property developers Taylor Woodrow and Countryside Properties have made very little progress with the planned Millennium Village close to the Millennium Dome in Greenwich, London, England. This model development for 3,000 residents was due to open in Dec 1999, but so far none of the environmentally-friendly houses have been built. A report commissioned by Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott indicates that the start date for construction work of Jul 1999 was unrealistic and that there will inevitably be problems connected with such a challenging project.

Modernism finds a human face
Article Abstract:
The 1.2 million pounds sterling Burrell competition to design housing for a site in the Old Town area of Edinburgh, Scotland, has been won by Richard Murphy's Modernist scheme. His design for 24 houses pays a lot of attention to the topography and history of housing in the city. It has four flats in two-storey spaces with very attractive views, along with 20 spacious apartments below. The competition's judges were attracted to Murphy's scheme because of its simplicity.

Prize schemes fail to beat the twee
Article Abstract:
The three housing schemes that won the UK's 1998 Housing Design Awards have some attractive elements, but do not make use of pioneering design features. It is becoming clear that significant reductions in construction costs and in energy consumption will only be made if designers are prepared to make use of advances in construction methods and new materials. Houses of traditional design remain popular, but need a great deal of energy to build.
