Sonny side of the beat
Article Abstract:
Sonny Rollins, jazz saxophonist, was born in Harlem in 1930 and learnt chord progressions in nightclubs where he followed Thelonious Monk, Charlie Parker and Bud Powell. He practises for five hours every morning using his own book of rudiments and arias trom Wagner's 'Tristan und Isolde'. He performs rarely so that every concert is of good standard. Several times he has absented himself from the music scene to improve himself either musically, to be cured of drug addiction or to study meditation. In concert he usually plays an unaccompanied solo piece with many changes; distractions prevent good improvisation.
