It is becoming increasingly common for UK companies to use private investigators to check potential employees. Some companies only check those applying for senior positions, while others only check those applying for graduate, managerial jobs. Some checks can be made fairly readily from records accessible to the general public, while others involve more detailed investigative work. There are mixed views about whether employers are justified in carrying out such checks.

The Swiss who went South

Article Abstract:

Isaac Manget was the first Swiss to settle in South Africa prior to the arrival of hundreds of Swiss, and later, French soldiers who plied their trades as farmers, cobblers and blacksmiths. Swiss preachers founded the Elim Mission station in 1879 while the Research Institute Onderstepoort was started by Sir Arnold Theiler. Prominent Afrikaans families such as the Loubsers, Gous and Gouws were all descended from Swiss immigrants.
