Now look who's talking
Article Abstract:
Parents of a child who is diagnosed as deaf at a very early age can often face very difficult decisions about how the child is to be taught to communicate. Some health professionals are opposed to children with a small degree of hearing being taught to use sign language, as they feel that this forces the child to become part of the deaf community. However, children often adapt very quickly to signing, and find it a much less frustrating way of communicating than trying to communicate verbally. In some cases, signing helps them to acquire spoken language.

Talking through the bar lines
Article Abstract:
Black culture should be integrated into the fabric of South Africa, but music by black composers is rarely broadcast and European culture is imported. African music is not written but is conveyed orally. It is usually improvised along set patterns. The PACT opera company Truck Theatre takes a touring programme of opera to township schools in South Africa. Projects and centres in Johannesburg, Soweto and elsewhere keep children occupied with singing, music and dancing despite lack of funds.

That's my son she's talking about
Article Abstract:
An article in the Independent described the symptoms of Klinefelter's syndrome as tallness, timidity, poor verbal ability and small genitals. A reader who suspected her son might have this chromosomal disorder describes her experiences. It is the most common after Down's syndrome and only occurs in boys. They may develop breasts at puberty and are infertile. It can be detected before birth through amniocentesis.
