Spinning reels for Uncle Joe
Article Abstract:
Andrei Konchalovsky has made a film, 'The Inner Circle', about Stalinism, using anecdotes from Stalin's gofer and his projectionist, Alexander Sergeyevich Ganshin. Stalin used to relax late at night watching films like Charlie Chaplin's 'Modern Times' and James Cagney films in a specially security-checked screening room. During the 20's only about 40 films a year were made in Russia, although about 200 would have been feasible. 'The Inner Circle' was the first American film to be made in the KGB headquarters inside the Kremlin.

Four Weddings and a happy ending?
Article Abstract:
PolyGram Europe's film division, set up in 1991 by executive vice-president Michael Kuhn, now controls an international range of independent production houses, and has backed more than 35 films. Kuhn has kept a low profile, allowing each production company which he controls to operate as a separate label. PolyGram was extremely successful in 1994 with 'Four Weddings and a Funeral,' but has also experienced some disasters, and 1995 will be a vital year in its development.
