Students are trapped on a treadmill of endless exams
Article Abstract:
The obsession with examinations in the UK has led to a decline in academic standards at all levels from GCSE upwards. This problem is increased by the fact that the UK lacks an integrated educational system, with changes being introduced in schools with no consideration for their impact on universities. In many cases, students will have examinations annually for six or seven years, placing them under great pressure and encouraging teaching to focus merely on what is required to pass these examinations.

Top marks for mediocrity in English
Article Abstract:
It is becoming clear that there are significant problems associated with the testing of English. In particular, the testing process seems to fail to take exceptional performance into account, especially in terms of style and creativity. Examiners seem to place strong emphasis on consistency, preferring bland answers to those that show creativity. This is a particular problem for boys, whose prose can be very articulate but who often fail to show consistently the ability to be discursive.

What do exam results mean?
Article Abstract:
There has been considerable controversy about GCSE and A-level examinations over recent years, with some observers claiming that standards have dropped, especially for A-levels. However, it is wrong to compare today's exam standards with those of the past. Instead, the emphasis should be on whether the exams are fair, consistent and valid for today's conditions. The most important thing is to ensure that the grades awarded are a fair reflection of the student's achievements.
