Students need a lesson in the facts of life
Article Abstract:
It is common for young people considering studying on an undergraduate course at a university in the UK to have very little awareness of the real costs associated with being a student. Many of them underestimate how much money they will need for expenses such as travel, food and accommodation. The Dept for Education and Employment issued a booklet on the new financial arrangements for universities in 1998, but this is very complex. The number of applications for university places continues to rise, but in practice applicants' choices are often limited by cost and geographical mobility.

A 3,000 pounds sterling degree fee
Article Abstract:
The committee which is currently reviewing the future of the UK's higher education system is expected to recommend that universities begin charging all full-time undergraduates for tuition. This charge, which would be around 1,000 pounds sterling a year, would be repaid by the student through national insurance after graduation. The committee's report will also list other options for funding higher education, including replacing grants and loans with larger loans and introducing means-tested scholarships.

'A degree isn't worth all the worry and the debt.'
Article Abstract:
Toby Street, who has debts of more than 10,000 pounds sterling dating back to his time as a student, indicates that he resents having to turn to his parents for financial assistance.
