Sweatshop controversy tarnishes Disney's big night
Article Abstract:
The image of Disney, which has traditionally been associated with positive values, has been damaged by claims by the charity World Development Movement that the company is making very large profits while paying extremely low wages to people in developing countries who make its merchandised goods. Disney emphasizes that it complies with all relevant legislation, and claims that it provides valuable employment in countries where work is scarce. The charity's report on working conditions in Haiti indicates that workers are forced to work overtime with little additional pay.

Ian Fitzgerald-Hay had a loaded gun in his hand when Devon and Cornwall police shot him dead. His sister says that was no excuse
Article Abstract:
Farmer Ian Fitzgerald-Hay undoubtedly did wrong to fire shots in a local pub and kill a police dog, but this did not justify his killing by Devon and Cornwall police in Oct 1993, according to his sister, Danny Hay. She points out that he had taken no hostages, was standing outside his home and had not been spoken to be a police negotiator. He was under great stress at the time, and should have been offered medical help, not treated as a dangerous criminal.
