Sweet attraction of a silent tape
Article Abstract:
Dr George Tomka, a temporary physics lecturer at Lancashire Polytechnic, is interested in permanent magnets and has been working in the Concerted European Action on Magnets (CEAM) team. One aspect of the group of over 120 scientists' work is developing audio tapes with purer sound and computer tapes and floppy disks that store data at higher densities. This work is sponsored by 3M. Permanent magnets are made from ceramic which is processed by sintering or melt spinning. Residual magnetism and interactions between grains of magnetic material are being studied.

The pits and the energy pendulum
Article Abstract:
The energy policy reflected the shortage of supply from 1926-1992. In 1993 the diverse sources are thought to guarantee supply, so energy is treated as a commodity subject to market economics. This results in subsidy of the nuclear industry, generating companies importing coal, and Regional Electricity Companies (Recs) building combined-cycle gas turbines. These factors produced the need to close coal pits.

A ray of light in a century of darkness
Article Abstract:
The use of X-rays has been one of the most significant scientific developments of the 20th century. Many medical applications for X-rays have been developed, and X-rays have also allowed important discoveries in other areas, such as the shape of DNA. Researchers are still discovering new applications for X-rays, including investigating the fundamental structure of high-temperature superconductors.
