The Metroski simulator developed by cameraman Jim Rodnunsky has a skiing surface on a platform which uses hydraulic rams to control its pitch. It also has a video system displaying footage of a 'ski-instructor.' This equipment, which will be formally launched in the UK at the European Fitness Convention, offers users the opportunity to adapt their technique to specific pistes. The carpet with which the platform is covered is not identical to snow, but good technique gives a satisfying result.

It's an uphill learning curve

Article Abstract:

The British Association of Ski Instructors has for some years been in dispute with the authorities in France regarding regulations governing the activities of British ski instructors in France. The qualifications of Swiss, Austrian, Italian and German ski instructors are recognized in France, but British instructors are required to pass a test before they are allowed to work at French resorts. A report is now to be set to the European Commission on this issue.

Proper maintenance of skis is vital to ensure a satisfying skiing experience. The ski edges must be tuned, thus making them as responsive as possible when turning, and the base must be smoothed and waxed to allow a reasonable speed to be achieved when skiing. Skiers who fail to maintain their skis properly may not realize that this can have a significant impact on their performance.
