Telecoms mania grips City
Article Abstract:
UK investors have shown strong interest in telecommunications stocks since summer 1997. Since that time, the telecommunications sector has outperformed the rest of the stock market by more than 50%. The most successful company has been local access operator Colt Telecom, which has seen its shares rise tenfold since it was floated in late 1996. Some observers are now expressing reservations about telecommunications stocks, warning that all companies may not necessarily see strong growth, even though telecommunications use will certainly continue to expand rapidly.

BT braces for battle to clear $10bn AT&T venture
Article Abstract:
It is likely that regulators will take some time to investigate the planned $10 billion joint venture between British Telecommunications and AT&T. This venture would involve linking all the international operations of both companies. It is expected that regulators will give particular attention to the two companies' total share of transatlantic telephone traffic. The merged concern will have 5,000 employees and be able to offer services in 237 countries.

Thumbs up for BT's alliance
Article Abstract:
The $10 billion alliance between British Telecommunications (BT) and AT&T has gained the backing of both the companies' shareholders and prospective customers. The joint venture will have 5,000 employees, and therefore a large cost base. This will mean that scale will be extremely significant. The two concerns will benefit from very large economies of scale by directing all their international traffic over their joint network.
