A survey of over 400 hardware stores and home centers indicates that a significant portion of the industry's retailers are nearing retirement age. Because the nature of the industry is characterized by family-owned stores, the question of owner-management succession is important; one finding of the survey is that over 50% of the respondents have no planned successor to their business.
