Music has an abstract element which separates if from the period of its composition, according to Russian pianist Yefim Bronfman. It is important to understand the context in which the music was composed, but music is not only a product of its time. He believes that preparation is vital in music performance, especially in recording, but also places considerable emphasis on the value of spontaneity.
