A great place for a holiday, but war has removed it from the itinerary
Article Abstract:
There were almost 150,000 foreign visitors to Kashmir in spring 1999, but the subsequent outbreak of fighting in the Kargil area has deterred tourists. Kashmir is the most beautiful place in the Indian subcontinent, but Dal Lake, on which Srinagar, the capital of Kashmir, is constructed, is becoming increasingly polluted as Srinagar expands. The insurgency may at least have the benefit of preventing further environmental damage to Dal Lake.
