'Was strange, our sweat mixed.' (novelist Oonya Kempadoo)
Article Abstract:
Novelist Oonya Kempadoo is keen not to be strictly defined as a Caribbean writer. She feels that writing is about trying to put into words what has not been said. She seeks to write in a way that can be understood by anyone, anywhere in the world. She does not regard herself as special, and feels that anyone can achieve their goals if they are sufficiently determined. She has been brave enough to take on the controversial subjects of race, sex, violence and politics in the Caribbean in her novel 'Buxton Spice.'

Talking about a revolution
Article Abstract:
Novelist Jane Smiley finds it hard to become involved in anything in which she is not genuinely interested. She regards the proliferation of writing tuition in the US as bringing particular benefits to women of her own generation, in their 40s and 50s. Her novels all look very closely at domestic and personal relationships, but she denies that any of her fiction is autobiographical. She feels that she grew up with a model of feminism that regards the personal as political.

Talking about a revolution
Article Abstract:
Recent research has produced new information about the language map of the brain. This information has implications for the diagnosis of conditions such as dyslexia and stroke-induced aphasia, and may also affect how these conditions are treated. Language is largely a left-brain skill, but it is now clear that the right hemisphere of the brain, which is involved with emotional perception and expression, is vital for giving words meaning beyond their literal content.
