Taxing time for Europe
Article Abstract:
The issue of tax harmonization in Europe has received extensive media coverage. It is widely assumed that tax harmonization will mean that companies will pay the same tax in each European Union country, but this is not the case, as the underlying system of determining the profits on which companies pay tax will continue to differ from country to country. The European Commission is putting European Union member states under pressure to coordinate tax policy, and has agreed a package of measures designed to eliminate damaging tax competition.
