Article Abstract:

Technology was added to the national curriculum to bring the UK up-to-date with economic needs. It covers a wide range of practical problem-solving tasks. Her Majesty's Inspectorate was dissatisfied with the lessons for five- to 14-year olds. There are different versions in most schools because there is no clear knowledge base. Revised proposals will be clearer and concentrate on manufacturing skills. Business studies, information technology and food may be ommitted. Sir Ron Dearing, chairman of the Schools Curriculum and Assessment Authority, completes the national curriculum review in summer 1993.

Article Abstract:

Bebington High School in the Wirral, England adopted an American system of assertive discipline in Sep 1992. The strict rules have a penalty and reward system. Breaking rules leads to the pupil's name being written on the blackboard and five-minute, 15- or 30-minute detentions. Rewards are letters of commendation which can be shown to parents and employers. This assertive discipline saves teachers' time repeating things and telling pupils off. This more positive approach with more praise produces polite pupils.
