Article Abstract:
Individual investors have 20% of share ownership in the UK but 49.7% in the US. The proportion of the population holding shares is similar at 20% but US investors play the stock market more seriously. Most British shareholders own shares in one company, acquired in the privatisation era. British investors have pension schemes with over 80% of their assets in equities. Credit market instruments are important to US investors and reducing yields on fixed-interest investments made US investors turn to shares.
