The writing on the wall
Article Abstract:
Fleur Kelly is the only artist in the UK who produces frescoes to commission, and she points out that, even in Italy, land of frescoes, there are only ten artists still producing them. Fresco, Italian for fresh, is a method of wall painting whereby powdered pigments mixed just with water are applied to wet plaster. The result is a unique translucency on a non-reflective mat surface. Frescoes are permanent without a protective finish and are as good as, and last as long as, the wall. The English climate is excellent for fresco production as the plaster takes longer to dry in the damp.

Where sculpture is good for you
Article Abstract:
A charity called Sustrans has constructed a network of outdoor sculpture trails for cyclists and walkers along the paths of old railways in Britain. When commissioning the sculptures, Sustrans favours artists who use discarded materials retrieved from the tracks. Although Sustrans receives some financial support from the government, most of its money comes from local government and environmental bodies. It still needs to raise funds constantly and planning permission for the art works can be difficult to obtain.

'Designer robberies' hit National Trust
Article Abstract:
The National Trust has suffered from a spate of thefts in 1992, and is increasing security measures to combat them. In 1992 the Trust has had 43 incidents, six of them foiled, where garden statuary has been stolen. It is believed that the thieves are stealing to order for private collectors on the continent. The remaining statuary is being fixed to the ground, alarmed, fenced in, or possibly copied and the original kept safe.
