Texans look to wreak revenge on the President
Article Abstract:
The appointment of Lloyd Bentsen as US Treasury Secretary has produced a vacant TX Senate seat but under a quarter of the 8 million registered voters in the state are likely to vote on Jun 5, 1993. The result of the clash between State Treasurer Kay Bailey Hutchinson and Democrat Bob Krueger is being regarded as a referendum on the flagging president. Mr Krueger and Mr Clinton are both expected to receive a negative vote. TX did not vote for Mr Clinton in the presidential election in Nov 1992 but regarded him kindly, being from the neighbouring state of AR.

Clinton - a blip in history
Article Abstract:
President Bill Clinton's forthcoming 'State of the Union' address is likely to contain messages of compromise and goodwill, and will be generally well received. However, the general trend in US politics is still moving towards the right, and the Republicans may remain in control of Congress until well after the end of the 20th century. The president is widely disliked, and appears to have few guiding principles. However, it is likely that the strength of the move towards the right could cause problems for any Democrat president.

America ruled by 2000 reasons for the quiet life
Article Abstract:
The re-election of Bill Clinton as US president in Nov 1996 was mainly the result of a widespread desire in the US not to upset the current peaceful and prosperous situation. Americans are reasonably content with their way of life, and therefore thought it best to retain Clinton as president. However, contentment brings with it the danger of becoming too introverted. There is still a strong conflict between isolationism and internationalism in the US, and the Clinton regime has yet to develop a coherent approach to this issue.
