Welcome to the West, Budapest
Article Abstract:
Communism meant there was no finance for rebuilding in Budapest, Hungary, so there are many grand buildings. A lot of inner city buildings were designed according to the influence of Baron Georges-Eugene Haussmann. Foreign developers wish to build in the inner city but the planning department is determined to preserve its character. Modern developers prefer Post-Modern style. Architect Imre Makovecz refuses to work with Western developers, who, he feels, disregard Budapest's heritage in their desire to make money.

Furthermore, many eastern European men are afraid of women who seem very independent and do not need a man to support them.

Chinatown in Budapest's back streets
Article Abstract:
The Chinese see Hungary as a land of opportunity despite language and work problems: about 10,000 are settled there mostly as entepreneurs. Police harrassment and bureaucratic problems with work permits are affecting joint-venture companies. The government introduced new visa requirements in Mar 1992 to restrict immigration, partly because of fear of crime. Police statistics show 5% of crime in Hungary is committed by foreigners.
