Thatcher backs Tory rebellion on Maastricht
Article Abstract:
When Mrs Thatcher was interviewed on 'Frost on Sunday' on TV-am on Jun 28 1992, the first time since the General Election, she supported the choice of John Major as Prime Minister but recommended that the people's beliefs should be investigated before removing sovereignty from their country. She said 'Eurocracy is not democracy - it's bureaucracy.' She suggested a reduction of interest rates and revaluation of sterling in the Exchange Rate Mechanism to revive the British Economy and restriction of the powers of the commission.

Thatcher backs embattled PM as pressure grows over Emu
Article Abstract:
It is vital that Conservative Eurosceptics reject approaches from UK Labour party leader Tony Blair and express support for prime minister John Major, according to former prime minister Margaret Thatcher. She has warned that socialism will re-emerge if the Labour party wins the next general election, and has rejected Blair's admiration of her leadership. Major faces defeat by the Eurosceptics and Labour over European Commission plans which may limit the UK's potential for opting out of the European single currency.

Tory handling of BSE crisis to go before public inquiry
Article Abstract:
The UK government is expected to announce before Christmas 1997 that a public inquiry will be held into the handling by the previous Conservative administration of the BSE crisis. The inquiry's main aim will be to establish what lessons can be learned from how the crisis was managed. However, government ministers are also keen to counter criticism for the deaths linked with BSE and the very high costs of subsidies to the beef industry.
