The Beat generation goes on
Article Abstract:
There is an excellent public transport system in San Francisco, CA, including the Bay Area Rapid Transit underground railway and cable cars that effortlessly transport passengers up the city's steep hills. Lombard Street claims to be the most crooked street in the world, with nearby Russian Hill a favoured location in motion pictures. Authentic Mexican food can be found in the Latino Mission district, as well as the widely-renowned street mural art. Over 100,000 cars a day cross the 1.2-mile wide Golden Gate Bridge between Marin Country and the peninsula of San Francisco.

A ghost town called Motown
Article Abstract:
The city of Detroit, MI, is still associated with music, but is no longer the home of Motown. It was a thriving centre for jazz and blues music in the 1930s and 1940s, but now lacks a vibrant social and cultural scene. There are many abandoned, decaying buildings, and the city centre is virtually deserted in the evenings. It is still possible to visit the small house where Berry Gordy Jr. started the record label that was to become associated with top groups such as the Supremes and the Temptations.

All across the nation
Article Abstract:
It is particularly worth visiting San Francisco in 1997, when various events will be held to mark the 30th anniversary of the first 'human be-in,' held in the city's Golden Gate Park in 1967. The sites associated with the hippy era now attract many visitors, and there is a unique atmosphere in the Haight Ashbury area, the centre of the hippy movement. It is worth visiting the former homes of the rock stars of the time, and also Buena Vista Park.
