The Conscience of the West
Article Abstract:
Composer Johannes Brahms, who died in 1897, attracted considerable controversy even during his lifetime. Some of his fellow composers had great respect for him, while others were more ambiguous about him. During his lifetime and since his death, controversy surrounding Brahms has focused mainly on the nature of his creative psychology, the sound of his music and the implications of his historical position. Some observers feel that he wrote awkwardly, while others emphasise the rich, complex nature of his musical texture.

Last waltz?
Article Abstract:
The waltz was an extremely popular musical form from the 1790s until the end of the 19th century, pervading many different types of music. However, it seemed to fall from favour at the beginning of the 20th century. Indeed, the vast majority of music composed in the 20th century has been in duple time, whereas the waltz is a triple time form. The meter is all downbeats in duple time, while triple time allows complementary upbeats. Composers seeking a truly new approach may wish to consider reviving the waltz form.

September songs
Article Abstract:
Eichendorff's poem 'Im Abendrot' sparked off the last works of composter Richard Strauss. He saw the poem's sentiments as an emblem of his life and art, and added three other settings to it. These were all of a strongly 19th century style at a time when serialism and other modern musical forms were becoming increasingly popular. However, their quality of feeling remains highly respected.
