The agony and the ecstasy
Article Abstract:
In the early decades of the 20th century, there was often no form of pain relief available to women during labour and delivery. Babies were commonly born at home, and those which took place in a nursing home were attended by the family doctor. In the middle decades of the century, women began to be better prepared for childbirth, but were still often left alone for long periods in hospital during their labour. Nowadays, women are determined to be informed about all their options, and like to work in partnership with the midwives and doctors.

Accused - the bully's tale
Article Abstract:
Parents of children accused of bullying in the UK can often find that they have nowhere to go for help. They may find it very difficult to establish exactly what has been happening, and may also find it hard to come to terms with the fact that their child could be a bully. Schools are in a very difficult situation when attempting to deal with bullying, especially if they are under strong pressure from the parents of children who have become the victims of bullying.

Rude stories in the playground
Article Abstract:
Mrs Iona Opie visited a Hampshire junior school every week in the 1970s to observe children's games and behaviour. Her attitude to the children encouraged them to tell her their rude jokes, rhymes and stories. She has recorded them in her book 'The People in the Playground' as an historical document of traditional lore and for trainee teachers to use in their theses. Boys and girls play separately in the playground except for the game of kiss-chase.
