The Government can't afford to be late for the Millennium
Article Abstract:
Problems with the construction of the Jubilee Line extension to the underground system in London, England, could have a very negative impact on the Millennium Dome, to which the Jubilee Line is intended to provide a public transport service. Prime Minister Tony Blair has sided with management in the industrial dispute which has brought work on the Jubilee Line to a halt. It is possible that strike breakers will be brought in to undertake the work which around 600 electricians are currently refusing to do, but this will probably not damage Blair's political reputation.

Three steps to make the capital a car-free paradise
Article Abstract:
Creating dedicated routes for cyclists would play a valuable role in reducing car usage in London, England. Some of these routes could be covered, thus ensuring that they can be used in poor weather. It is also worth considering creating bike depots across the city, where cyclists could shower and change their clothes. Other potential ideas for reducing car usage in London include developing personalized information technology to allow goods, services and travel to be more closely tailored to individual requirements.

Should Nelson and Churchill look down on car-free zones?
Article Abstract:
The UK government is to consider plans for closing parts of the centre of London, England, to traffic. This would particularly apply to Trafalgar Square and Parliament Square. The scheme, which is being studied by architect Sir Norman Foster in association with road traffic and pedestrian movement experts, would be small in scale, involving no new structures or diversion of roads. Planning has also involved consulting 130 organizations and statutory bodies.
