The Government may know your secrets, but who told them?
Article Abstract:
The security services in the UK routinely monitored the activities of people whose activities they were suspicious about in the 1970s. Such people included members of the Communist Party, even though at that time this party was committed to parliamentary democracy. Current Home Secretary Jack Straw has now been tackled by a Home Affairs Select Committee about government files held on people who were regarded as subversives in the 1970s. Some observers believe that these files should now be destroyed, while others feel that those on whom files are still held should be allowed to see them.

The growing threat to our green and pleasant land
Article Abstract:
The south-east of England is coming under great pressure as the demand for new housing continues to rise. In contrast, far fewer people seem to want to live in the north of England. It is clear that the government must take decisive action to address this issue, rather than merely waiting for market forces to resolve it. It should at the very least ensure that as much derelict land in the south as possible is reused, rather than new homes being built on greenfield sites.

Listen with mother
Article Abstract:
Audiobooks have traditionally had a rather negative image in the UK, being seen as a way for people who purchase them to avoid the trouble of reading for themselves. However, views are now starting to change, and the first awards for audiobooks in the UK were recently made. The sector expanded by 50% in 1994, and is now worth around 34 million pounds sterling. It is expected to continue to expand.
