The government, the terracotta and the Academy
Article Abstract:
The Royal Academy had decided that its exhibition of African art should include some of the extraordinary terracotta figures discovered in recent decades near the ancient city of Djenne, Mali. However, these were acquired by western collectors by rather dubious means, and the British Museum objected to them being exhibited, threatening to withdraw its own pieces from the show. Officials from the Royal Academy have bowed to the pressure from the British Museum, but feel that not displaying the figures will not ensure that they are returned to Mali.

Art and culture schlock
Article Abstract:
Films which portray the lives of famous artists, such as Van Gogh in 'Lust for Life,' are generally criticised by art experts as being far removed from the known facts about the particular artist's life. Many academics disapprove of biography in any form, as they believe that it creates unnatural links between life and art. They would prefer to focus on the paintings themselves, while commercial considerations make it necessary to highlight aspects of the artist's life which will be of interest to the general public.

No man is a South Sea island
Article Abstract:
The exhibition entitled 'From Manet to Gauguin: masterpieces from Swiss private collections' currently being held at the Royal Academy, London, UK, includes seven Gauguin works from various stages of his career. The most significant is 'Nafea fasipoipo,' which is probably a double-portrait of the artist's child-bride seated in a glade by a pool at the foot of Mount Orohena. This was intended to attract the attention of a Parisian public focused on everyday life.
