The Libeskind effect
Article Abstract:
Architect Daniel Libeskind, who has been awarded the commission to design a new Imperial War Museum in Manchester, England, has been attracting controversy for some time. His Jewish Museum in Berlin, Germany, will open on time and within budget in 1998, but has been the subject of widespread criticism. He has also found it hard to convince people that his design for the Boilerhouse extension to the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, England, will be successful. He has had to show great commitment to overcome the opposition which his designs have encountered.

Edinburgh's new stronghold
Article Abstract:
The new National Museum of Scotland, which is nearing completion in Edinburgh, Scotland, will contain more than 10,000 everyday household items from throughout Scottish history. Designed by architect Gordon Benson of Benson and Forsyth, the building blends in completely with Edinburgh's old town. Some elements of the design reflect the city's medieval castle, and other elements reflect Benson's desire to respect 18th and 19th century urban planning. The displays will be simple and direct, thus allowing visitors to experience the architecture too.

A design fit for a queen
Article Abstract:
The new River and Rowing museum in Henley, England, designed by architect David Chipperfield, will become a landmark in a town where change takes place only very slowly. The shape of the museum has been inspired by boats, with which the town is closely associated, particularly through the annual regatta. The building shows recognition of its historic site, but also contains modern elements and humour. In particular, its watery luminous light reflects the Thames.
