The wired election?
Article Abstract:
There are mixed views about the possible role of the Internet in the forthcoming general election in the UK. Some observers believe that this is the first general election in which online communications have played a significant role, while others feel that it will be some time before the Internet really plays a part in campaigning. The UK only has 2.4 million Internet users, but new election sites are being set up all the time. These include Online Magic's General Election 97 site, which offers interactive facilities and detailed local constituency information.

Surfing the Net for souls
Article Abstract:
There is a great deal of religious activity on the Internet. It is estimated that more than 80% of the mainstream religious sites are Christian, although Buddhism, Islam, Judaism and Hinduism together have the same number of followers as Christianity. The vast majority of the Christian sites are Protestant, even though around 55% of Christians are Catholic. Some observers believe that the Internet is serving to break down the hierarchies and denominations on which religion has been based for generations.

Get ready to place your bets on the Net
Article Abstract:
There are now many online gambling sites on the Internet. Most are based in the Caribbean, where it is possible to establish a casino relatively inexpensively. It is estimated that bets worth $450 million are placed online every year, and this is having a beneficial impact on Caribbean economies. However, the anti-gambling lobby in the US is seeking to make all US online gambling illegal. Planned legislation would punish both those who accept online bets and those who make them.
