The Third Way will drive Europe into a slump
Article Abstract:
UK Prime Minister Tony Blair has called for continental Europe to address its economic problems, especially high unemployment, by shifting towards the US model of economic openness and dynamism. However, it is important to be cautious about advocating the US model for Europe. Economic revival in the US has involved the creation of many casual, low-wage jobs, and the US stock market remains extremely overvalued. In contrast, Europe has sought to preserve high-skill, hi-tech employment, and it still has a very large balance of trade surplus.

Eat meat, save foxes and shoot down the Tories
Article Abstract:
A victory for the UK Labour party in the by-election in Eddisbury, England, would be much more effective than the actions of animal rights campaigners in weakening the pro-hunting lobby. Conservative party leader William Hague is aware that it will be a very close contest in this constituency, and is seeking to shift the debate away from hunting. It is natural for many wild animals to become the food of others higher up the food chain, but the government should ban the hunting of hares, foxes and deer.

Be brave, Tony, and kick out the Cabinet sycophants
Article Abstract:
There has been a great deal of media speculation in the UK about the changes likely to be made by Prime Minister Tony Blair to his Cabinet. All Labour MPs agree that this speculation has been damaging, bringing instability and focusing attention on personalities, rather than the government's policies. It is likely that Blair will keep around him a small circle of loyalists, thus robbing backbench MPs of the opportunity to have a real say in the direction of the government.
