Italy declares emergency in landslide region
Article Abstract:
The huge river of mud and detritus driven into the Sarno valley in Italy by heavy rain has destroyed the homes of around 2,000 people and killed at least 87 people. The Italian government is to make available 50 billion lire to repair the damage, but experts believe that the Sarno region actually needs much greater investment if further environmental crises are to be avoided. Houses have been constructed on hillsides regarded as landslide zones, and the clay soil of mountains in the region has been loosened by fires and deforestation.

Berlusconi loses his grin as power slips away
Article Abstract:
The future seems uncertain for Italy's Forza Italia party. Many of its members have left, particularly in reaction to the fact that party leader Silvio Berlusconi has a habit of making contradictory decisions. His unpredictability has also had a negative impact on the other parties which form the centre-right Freedom Front coalition, which he also heads. Berlusconi was very confident when he entered politics in 1994, but has now had to greatly scale down his ambitions. Indeed, he may be forced to leave politics altogether.
