The anatomy of a very secret coup
Article Abstract:
It has come to light that there was UK involvement in moves to overthrow Johnny Paul Koroma, who had seized power in Sierra Leone from President Ahmad Tejan Kabbah. Specifically, former Scots Guard Lt-Col Tim Spicer was involved in negotiations with former Thai banker Rakesh Saxena, who wished to support Kabbah because he wanted to protect his investments in Sierra Leone. Spicer has denied that his military consulting business was ever involved in illegal arms trading or with international organized crime or rebel factions. Peter Penfold, the British High Commissioner in Sierra Leone, met both President Kabbah and Spicer.
