The A to B of choosing a profitable portfolio
Article Abstract:
Fund manager Andrew Brough, who is responsible for the Schroder UK Smaller Companies fund, recalls that he developed an interest in investment at an early age. He seeks companies with a strong competitive advantage which can offer above-average growth over the medium term. He feels that the main factor behind the fund's success has been teamwork. His team pays particular attention to the stocks of companies in secular growth trends, operating either in new industries or fast-growing sectors of the economy.

Hunt for the gem of that long good buy
Article Abstract:
It is very enjoyable to manage a fund where cashflow is strongly positive, as this makes it possible to invest in new ideas without changing the portfolio, according to Jon Thornton, manager of the Aberdeen UK Blue Chip Unit Trust. He emphasizes that the fund is seeking growth, but that there is no desire to pay very high prices. He feels that the low-inflation environment will continue, and will therefore seek companies with specific growth features.
