The battle for Europe's future
Article Abstract:
European Union leaders had assumed that plans to create a single currency by Jan 1999, as set down in the Maastricht treaty, would go ahead with relatively few problems. However, recent strike action in France has forced a review of this and other assumptions about Europe's political and economic future. If the strikers force the French government to make concessions, then it is very likely that monetary union will be delayed, and it could even be abandoned altogether. Monetary union will clearly be a much more controversial issue that European Union leaders had initially anticipated.

Time's up: we must decide on the euro
Article Abstract:
UK prime minister John Major is under pressure from Eurosceptics to reach a compromise on European monetary union. This would involve the UK government ruling out the possibility of joining a monetary union from the start date of Jan 01, 1999, but retaining the option to join later if such a union proved successful. In contrast, continental European countries are generally very enthusiastic about monetary union, and are making extensive preparations to ensure that their economies are strong enough to join.

Is Europe driving Germany up the wall?
Article Abstract:
Germany has made considerable efforts to merge itself very closely with its European allies over recent decades. However, a more negative view of European Union membership is now starting to emerge there. More and more Germans are sceptical about the advantages of European monetary union, and there are even mixed views among politicians. Unification has brought many changes in Germany, which now has a stronger sense of what is in its interests and what is not.
